21 September 2024: Today marked the official opening of the newly rebuilt Millie Ifill Fish Market in Weston, St. James. The reconstruction, one of the major projects in Barbados Port Inc's Corporate social responsibility programme, provides critical support to the fishing industry.
The new facility now features state of the art equipment, modern public bathrooms, recreational spaces, and parking to better serve the community.
The ceremony also honoured the legacy of the late Millie Ifill, a centenarian and former fish vendor who touched many lives in the community and after whom the facility is named.
Chief Fisheries Officer's Remarks
Today marks a significant milestone in the development of the fishing industry in Barbados, a true demonstration of a successful collaboration between the Barbados Port 𝐈𝐧𝐜, Fish Markets Division and the Fisheries Division.
The new Millie Ifill Fish Market in Weston stands out in the community as a diamond on the west, not only aesthetically pleasing, but fit for purpose. This world-class facility raises the profile and catalyses the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
In our thrust towards aspiring to excellence and promoting Seafood quality assurance in the post harvest sector, this building epitomizes the highest standard of excellence. It is outfitted with the amenities and equipment to the support the processing and sale of good quality fish and promote the improvement of sanitary measures.
The facility also provides a space to encourage social interaction and a hub for fisherfolk and members of the Weston Fisherfolk and Community organization. Given their positive outlook, I know they will be good stewards of the market. Maintenance and asset care management will be key in sustaining the facility.
In a time where Harbouring Hope and inspired action is the way that we are navigating after the catastrophic impact to our sector on 1 July, a blue recovery for the fisheries sector involves interventions at different points along the value chain.
The opening ceremony today will inspire us to keep pressing forward to ensure that our industry reaches his highest potential.
‘Transformative, Inclusive and Sustainable’. These are the words of the motto of the Barbados Fisheries Division, recognizing that through the collaboration of stakeholders from individuals such as those gathered here today, the island enjoys the flourishing fishing industry that Barbados is fortunate to have and will continue to have for future generations.
Thanks to everyone who has devoted their time and efforts to the completion of this new facility.
Congratulations on a job well done!
