During the month of September, the Regional Security System (RSS) and the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism collaborated to conduct the RSS' Fisheries Prosecution and Interdiction course in Barbados.
Fifteen officers from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Belize and Jamaica completed a blended training course where two weeks were conducted online and three spent doing intensive practical sessions in person.
The training served to train law enforcement and fisheries officers in the detection, investigation, and prosecution of Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing, arming participants with stronger knowledge of the correct law enforcement procedures, as well as the legal and other principles underlying legislative instruments.
Two officers from the Barbados Fisheries Division - Tonya Ifill and Makayla Williams - took part in the training, helping to boost the Division's knowledge on techniques for the preparation of Trial Proceedings for fisheries-related offences should the need arise.
