The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute is set to host its 78th conference in Cartagena, Colombia, from the 27th-31st of October, 2025. The conference serves as a knowledge exchange between fisheries scientists, managers, and other stakeholders throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, sharing challenges and collaborating on solutions for marine ecosystems, fisheries, climate change, and marine litter.

The Barbados Fisheries Division will be in attendance virtually, with software engineer Kristian Payne making a presentation on the development of the Division's bespoke Fisheries Information System (FIS). The platform will be able to display all collected data visually on dashboards, instantly informing users of the platform on fish landings data, up-to-date vessel inspection information, vessel incident and search and rescue, and price data for example.

Daniel Gibbs, previous intern at the Division in the 2025 cohort will also be making a presentation, focusing on his work to characterize Barbados' sportfishing fleet which is set to be under the remit of the Division after the passing of its new Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development Suite of Laws.
