First celebrated November 21st, 1997, World Fisheries Day was conceptualized in New Delhi, India during the International Fishermen’s Organization meeting. The day was created in recognition of the importance of sustainable fishing practices and the well-being of fisheries-dependent communities worldwide.

This day is of particular significance for Barbados; an island which has had its identity heavily built around the ocean and fish. Known affectionately as the Land of the Flyingfish, the flyingfish is displayed regularly throughout the country's culture, found on the dollar coin, within the national passport, and is a main component in Barbados' national dish. Other species which are well known and loved include the dolphinfish, marlin, and wahoo.

Everyone in Barbados knows someone who works in the fisheries sector; from the harvesters and vendors, to the scalers, large fish processors, and culinary artists, all are important cogs in the wheel that keeps an industry that is key for our livelihood and nutrition turning. As such, the Barbados Fisheries Division wishes all who work in the fisheries sector a happy World Fisheries Day!
