Three months ago, ten interns began their summer journey at the Barbados Fisheries Division. Anij Brewster, Daniel Gibbs, Sumara Benn, Xavier King, Qiana Ellis, Deshawn Proverbs, Giovanni Williams, Nailah Greenidge, Julita Fergusson, and Kya Knight all embarked on exciting paths throughout the various sections of the Division.
Each intern was instrumental in seeing the Division through what was a hectic summer. From hitting the ground running with the Research Frontiers Symposium at the start of summer to the Fisheries Mock Trial Simulation at the end, they all performed well. This was in addition to their journies in the research and development, vessel inspectorate, seafood inspectorate, and services sections of the Division. Coming with great skills of their own, they were able to refine those, as well as gain new ones; being well-equipped as five of them head back into the world.

Internship Presentations Delivered on Monday, 25 August 2025
We say bon voyage to 5 interns , who gave their final presentations which covered what they each accomplished in their sections throughout the summer. All played pivotal roles in preparing the Division as major changes arise as a result of the new Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development Act, 2025 and Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development (Seafood Markets and Businesses) Act, 2025. Qiana Ellis and Xavier King undertook a critical dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) length-weight frequency analysis, beginning baseline data collection that will further inform fish size regulations. Daniel Gibbs characterized the sportsfishing fleet, which is set to come under the Division's remit. Kya Knight worked hard with Kristina Adams, aquaponics expert, to further advancements in the aquaculture field, and Deshawn Proverbs aided in obtaining measurements of the longline and ice boat fleets' ice box capacities, which will inform recommendations for more efficient designs.
We thank them for their hard work and dedication this summer, and wish them all the best!
