In anticipation of the enforcement of the Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development (Seafood Markets and Businesses) Act, 2025 under which all fisherfolk must produce certification of the completion of training in seafood safety within the last 2 years. Proof of certification will be requested at the point of registration in order to be reregistered or for first registration with the Fisheries Division.
As such, the Fisheries Division through a landmark collaboration with the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, will hold a training course in Seafood Safety & Quality Assurance for Fishers in Public Seafood Markets and Onboard Commercial Fishing Vessels. The training will be delivered by Dr. Kelly Brathwaite, Lecturer in Microbiology
Persons who have received training in seafood safety within the last 2 years are not required to register for training in 2025. The training course will be held from July 28 - August 8, 2025, with training occurring in two day sessions across the 2 weeks excluding bank holidays.
Training will commence from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily and will be divided into two target groups. Dr. Brathwaite will facilitate all sessions.
