This February, Barbados joined the Guy Harvey Foundation's Dolphinfish Research Program (DRP). This program aims to integrate the public in an international tagging program to collect data on dolphinfish life history. As the dolphinfish is a particularly important commercial species in Barbados, studying its movements and population dynamics is critical.

The first dolphinfish tagging expedition aboard the Lucky Penny led to us successfully tagging 6 juvenile dolphinfish. Along with tagging the fish, their lengths, sex, and physical fitness after release were recorded. The coordinates of the locations where the fish were caught were also noted. With the overall goal of tagging 100 dolphinfish, this journey has only just begun, and we are committed to ensuring management decisions made are based on sound science and studies relevant to local populations.

Fisheries Biologist Jalisa King as she explains the importance of the tagging and the procedures for the day to students from the University of the West Indies Cavehill Campus and the Barbados Community College that joined the expedition.
