Nine interns made their start at the Barbados Fisheries Division on the 2nd of June for the summer of 2025. During this time, they will have the opportunity to utilize their unique skills in aid of the Division's mission: to ensure the optimum utilization of the fisheries resources in the waters of Barbados for the benefit of the people of Barbados through management and development.

From left to right: Daniel Gibbs, Sumara Benn, Xavier King, Qiana Ellis, Deshawn Proverbs, Giovanni Williams, Nailah Greenidge, Julita Fergusson, and Kya Knight.

Each coming from various backgrounds and disciplines, from environmental law and marine diesel engineering, to aquaculture and ecology, this year's diverse cohort will gain a wealth of knowledge in what is an equally diverse industry.

The summer ahead promises to be an engaging one as they work in various sectors of the Division such as the Vessel Inspectorate, Seafood Inspectorate, Services Section, and Research & Development Department and the Admin and Policy Development Section. Site visits to markets and landing sites will be woven throughout where they will be able to interact and engage with the fisherfolk who keep the wheels of the industry turning, they are in for a well-rounded experience.

With that, we welcome the 2025 intern cohort!
